Right from our inception, the University of Sunderland has been committed to producing graduates who positively shape society, while reducing the persistent economic and social inequalities facing communities in the North East region. It is this twin purpose that has earned Sunderland its reputation as a “life-changing” university, and is the reason I am proud to work as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Society and as part of the senior leadership team for our fantastic institution. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide named Sunderland as the 2021 University of the Year for Social Inclusion, and we will continue to drive forward change in this area in years to come. Our London-based campus, the University of Sunderland in London, combines the best of our famously-friendly academic support with first-class facilities, fantastic location and life-shaped learning options.

One of five faculties in the University, our Faculty of Education and Society comprises two academic schools, the School of Education and the School of Social Sciences. The Faculty’s emphasis on continuous improvement and maintaining a high profile institutionally, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally has resulted in a number of accolades:

  • 2nd in the UK for Teacher Training in the Guardian League Table 2020

  • The only University in England to offer our BSC STEM suite for ITT.

  • The only University in the UK to offer a specialist B.A (Hons) Primary with SEND QTS

  • An Early Adopter to the DfE PGCE APPLY Portal for application to PGCE programmes

  • The regional Lead in the National Tutor Programme (NTP)

  • 1 of 8 HEIs in the UK to introduce Early Childhood Graduate Competencies

  • Only HEI in the UK to offer a 2- year accelerated Professional Policing degree

  • The only HEI in the North East to introduce the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship, celebrated in the recent Social Work week events schedule provided by Social Work England

  • The only provider of a professionally recognised Community and Youth Work degree in the region.

Our School of Education has four main areas of provision, three of which are predominately concerned with training teachers at local, regional, national and international levels; Initial Teacher Training, International Teacher Education and Post Compulsory Education and Training.  Our undergraduate Initial Teacher Education courses are rated 2nd in the UK in the Guardian League Tables 2020.  Our International Teacher Education provision provides teacher training in over 50 countries worldwide.  Our Post Compulsory Education and Training provision provides training for teachers in sixth form colleges, further education colleges, vocational training and adult education. The fourth area of our provision is our post graduate provision Professional Developmentwhich provides post qualifying Masters in Education provision, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

The Faculty has a strong focus on inclusion, equality and diversity both academically and in the support and opportunities that we offer to our students and staff.  We have a significant focus on widening access and will deploy our expertise to ensure we recruit students from the communities they will ultimately serve.

At this exciting stage in our journey, we are seeking to appoint a new Head of the School of Education, who will work closely with myself to strategically lead the School and to drive academic leadership and change across the School and Faculty. The School of Education is a large academic school and is a strong advocate for raising the status of the teaching profession through high quality provision of teaching, learning, research and partnerships. We are seeking an innovative and inspiring new leader to take us on the next phase of our strategic journey, as we continue to expand and provide professional, vocational and practice-based services with campus provision in Sunderland, Hong Kong and London and partners throughout the world.

There has never been a more crucial time for our fantastic University to have a truly life-changing impact on students, staff, industry and commerce, and the School of Education is uniquely placed to be a key influential player in realising this institutional-wide ambition.
