The Impact Executives’ Annual Change Leadership Event
On Wednesday February 11th 2015, Impact Executives hosted their Annual Leadership and Business Change Event at the Soho Hotel.
Christine de Largy, Managing Director, opened the evening by presenting the results of the Annual Change Leadership Survey and discussed the complexity and ever increasing pace of change and innovation.
Innovation is a key driver this year with 62% of respondents expecting their focus to be growth rather than delivering business efficiencies. Integrating an innovation culture is seen as the best method for creating innovation success. However, embedding an organisation-wide culture can take time and patience, both of which are often in short supply when business change is constant. Establishing a formal system for creative ideas or defining innovation requirements in the job of key staff can be set up quicker, but more than one in five business leaders (21 per cent) are placing their faith in giving staff time off to pursue their own innovation projects, anticipating that he external perspective gained during this activity will add value to their organisation.
Who better to share insight and elaborate on the importance of innovation than keynote speaker, Roger Flynn, an expert in transformational change. Rogers experience is unique having led transformational change in five global companies. He is now an investor and Chairman of three Media and Technology Companies. Following a successful MBO with Warburg Pincus, Roger ran the European and Asian businesses of SDI Media Group, a global Film and Television business. Prior to SDI, Roger was Chief Executive of BBC Ventures Group and BBC main board member and created over £1bn of value; he was Managing Director of Prudential Retail, with £2bn sales, 6m customers and 6,500 staff with a brief to turnaround the business; General Manager World Sales & Distribution at British Airways with a brief to transform airline distribution; Director of Virgin working directly for Sir Richard Branson on deals and new business ideas.
Roger discussed how global forces for change are at an unprecedented level and how challenging strategies, business models and the ability of corporations to think and react or adapt fast enough are crucial. Drawing on insights from the “Virgin Way” and his own experiences to include thinking differently, being bolder and managing risk effectively as we have to take on ever more risk.
He discussed inhibitors to innovation with the BA Blue Door story showed him the very real fear organisations have of doing things differently and how this holds them back. Speaking on how the “rules” get in the way of innovation and how to overcome the obstacles, Roger gave a couple of examples of innovative moves from businesses he is currently involved in – Olive Communications and a new mobile platform technology.
Roger gave numerous examples of transformation for example at The Pru, including the UK reorganisation where the teams were given the problem to solve the cost saving objective, shows the powerful impact of leadership. Roger believes change must come from the human side of the business. Through aligning new target operating models and high level business strategy, it is the impact of leadership upon the culture and helping staff embrace change that is critical.
