Policy Forum for London – Infrastructure planning in London
On Tuesday February 3rd Trudy Peeler, Head of Transport and Infrastructure at Impact Executives, attended the Policy Forum for London on Infrastructure planning in London. Speakers included Sir Edward Lister Chief of Staff and Deputy Mayor, Policy & Planning, Mayor’s office and Stephen Dance, Head of Infrastructure Delivery, Infrastructure UK with other speakers from a range of other speakers from organisations such as Thames Tideway, Network Rail, National Grid, ARUP and BT.
The debate covered a variety of Infrastructure projects highlighting current and future challenges of infrastructure planning and development within the Capital. Recurring themes were addressing the continuing problem of capacity and congestion, along with meeting the needs of demand and the environment but that any future initiatives would only work with long term, consistent political commitment by successive governments.
It’s clear that planning the housing, transport, utilities, power and waste needs of London for the future is further complicated by the pace of change of technology and changing needs and behaviours of the population.
The skills agenda was also frequently discussed as high demand is increasing scarcity for particular expertise. Education and engagement with employers through initiatives such as the education centre set up by National Grid, Crossrail’s TUCA and the Tideway Tunnel apprenticeships are essential to developing talent of the future.
