Delivering change in a challenging environment

On April 15th Trudy Peeler, Head of Transport and Infrastructure at Impact Executives, hosted a networking event for a select group of interim executives to discuss Delivering in Challenging Environments.  Interims are often thrown into difficult situations and expected to get results quickly, having the tools to quickly assess what needs to be done and the ability to swiftly make a positive impact for clients is essential.

Ian Clarke  led the discussion and having climbed the 7 summits, walked to both the North and South Poles and undertaken many other expeditions he was able to draw on both this and his corporate experience.

In order to succeed, the first step is to really understand where the challenge within a business exists. Ian suggests that this is largely as a result of customers, markets or economics changing and whether the clients objectives are to deliver growth or efficiency . By keeping a “laser focus” on the objective, customer need and how that will be achieved will ensure the business stays focussed on a common purpose and achieve successful outcome.

Having the courage to stop initiatives that aren’t delivering to purpose, the T-Test and asking how much time you spend on competition were all shared learning’s.

Ian’s experience spans a 25 year career (so far) which started as an officer in the British Army. His experiences range from various main board member roles for O2 UK’s £7bn turnover business, Chief Transformation Officer and President of AsiaPac / Middle East at the O2 Group, a non-executive director role with a Tesco subsidiary, to more recently a number of assignments where rapid turnaround was required for clients ranging in size from Fortune 100 players to owner funded start-ups. Ian became an interim executive in 2010.
