A most kind invitation from Lord Jones and Jaguar Land Rover

Lord Jones, known for his championing of British business and now business guru on the BBC’s hugely popular The New Troubleshooter programme, extended a most interesting invitation for Christine de Largy, Managing Director of Impact Executives, to join a select band to tour the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plant at Castle Bromwich.

Key fact 1… Did you know JLR employs 29,000 people around the world and 28,000 of those are in the UK. And 11,000 of those have been hired within the last 3 years.

Quite an achievement if you thought that the British car industry was flat lining and in danger of extinction. Their investment in the future has been staggering, 7000 employees are designers and engineers and the reach of the brand is huge, they are in 172 countries.

Founded in 1922 and Range Rover, so loved by everyone from celebrities to farmers, was launched in1977. JLR now operates in the UK in Halewood, Castle Bromwich, Solihull, Whitley and Gaydon, which also has a test track.

The business has great ambitions, Jaguar sales are set to double next year. With emerging markets now representing 50% of the business, Europe a mere 20%, 23% in china and 17% from North America.

The business is led by advanced design, engineering and technology. So it is not surprising they are investing in education with graduate programmes at Coventry University.

The global Premium brand segment is growing but it brings with it significant challenges. Each market imposes different regulations and customer demands. And it takes four years to design and build a new car so one can’t afford to get these things wrong.

This enormous investment would not be possible were it not for the support and clear strategic vision of Tata, who are described as great owners. They are said to have brought a new sense of purpose and investment to the base infrastructure.

Key fact 2… Did you know JLR have a rail head at Castle Bromwich to take their cars straight to the docks at Southampton?

The businesses investment in people continues as they are opening 10 new training academies by 2020. Their mission is to inspire tomorrow’s engineers and they seem to be successful at this as they have a Times 100 best graduate programme.

Key fact 3… Did you know most of the parts required at Castle Bromwich are sourced within a 20 mile radius?

The size of the challenges they have set themselves are breath-taking. These include creating another 1700 jobs in Solihull and investing £1bn in next three years in dealer partners in Brazil, Saudi Arabia and in China with a JV.

And finally, for those who thought the heart had been knocked out of the British car industry or had gone the way of the dodo… JLR finished the morning reminding us that their success is predicated on, their laser focus on quality, their Britishness differentiates their brand and of course that a Jaguar will always make ones heart beat faster.

Thank you to Lorraine Ellison CBE , Lord Jones, Jenny Smith, Nisha Patel and all at the jaguar land rover, castle Bromwich for making it such an inspirational and memorable day. Now I must talk to the husband about buying that new Jaguar F-Type Coupé!
