The Long Commute versus the Happy Planet?
We are
increasingly seeing a number (albeit small numbers at present) of our
Interim Managers relocate domestically to strategic nodal points in
Europe, where they can commute (usually on a weekly basis) to
the current assignment, wherever it may be in Europe or beyond. I have
one Interim Manager who weekly commutes to her assignment in
Switzerland from her homes in Southern France and Scotland.
A recent
future-gazing report suggests that "we could see a new type of
commuting - where large numbers of people work in the UK but live
overseas. High house prices, cheap flights, flexible working hours and
e-mail and the internet are making it easier to work from home are all
set to combine to create a new breed of long-distance commuter. When
you think of the commuter belt around London you don't immediately
think of Barcelona, Marrakech and Tallinn".

But how do you decide where to live? According to the progressive New Economics Foundation (a sort of an anti-Cato Institute), who compiled the 'Happy Planet Index' and established its criteria for ranking 178 countries
using classic economics. The UK is sadly only ranked at only 108 in the
HPI order! So where should we be living, well apparently it is Vanuatu.
This South Pacific archipelago, stretching between 15 and 20 degrees
south and lying due west of Fiji and northeast of New Caledonia, is,
according to the Happy Planet Index, the happiest country on Earth. The
criteria used for determining happiness are what appeal to those of us
with a normal human heart rate and relatively modest expectations in
life.
However I somehow feel with all those extra carbon emissions the planet will be far from happy? Where would you like to live?
