How Do We Assess Interim Managers?

Once interim managers' CVs have been reviewed and are cleared for the next stage, they are interviewed by our trained consultants using a structured process established by Saville & Holdsworth to accurately assess the abilities of each candidate. This is followed by detailed reference checking.

We then establish whether they have the right personal qualities to succeed in interim management, using Impact Executive and Cubiks© extensive research into the typical characteristics of highly effective interim managers, when compared to traditional career-orientated permanent managers.

The key findings of the research showed that interim managers differed from permanent staff in a number of ways. Highly effective interim managers were found to:

  • Be confident leaders

able to make quick decisions to get the job done, and willing to speak their mind to ensure results are achieved
  • Enjoy change

and be stimulated by new challenges (as you might expect from a career interim manager)
  • Be more dedicated to the task in hand

both in terms of hours worked and levels of commitment - they also felt they were able to progress tasks more quickly than permanent colleagues
  • Have a strong completer/finisher trait

    to ensure results are delivered
  • Be better strategic thinkers

possibly because of their ability to quickly conceptualise and analyse new challenges
  • Strongly value planning

important to the delivery of quick results
  • Be equally loyal

and just as likely to be team orientated and close to colleagues as permanent employees
