The Future of Retail – An evening with Mortimer Spinks, Valtech and Peter Cowgill, Exec Chair of JD Sports.
On 22nd October, Mortimer Spinks, Impact Executives’ sister company within Harvey Nash plc, hosted a fantastic event in conjunction with Valtech.
Exploring the topic of The Future of Retail, Peter Cowgill, Executive Chairman of JD Sports, spoke to an intimate group of C-Level retail and technology professionals about his experiences and the knowledge he gained from a young age that led him to where he is today. Harry Gooding, Associate Director of Mortimer Spinks, kicked the evening off introducing Peter to the room before leading him into conversation.
From humble beginnings Peter worked his way up, not listening to anyone that told him he couldn’t do ‘it’. Instead he demonstrated a determination to succeed while maintaining a grounded outlook. Peter ‘worked hard and never counted his chickens’, it is clear he has the same attitude today.
A successful early career as an accountant led Peter to be a trusted advisor to his clients and enabled him to establish Cowgill Holloway Chartered Accountants. The year spent working in a boutique store taught Peter the true importance of customer service. Part of his success is down to knowing every aspect of the full breadth of his business, being aware of the competition, making smart and strategic acquisitions and having a very clear idea of what JD’s customer base looks like.
Peter answered questions around the kind of effect digitisation has had on JD Sports and how if he had to do it all again, he would still have had the retail store front and the digital platform.
A fantastic evening was had by all. Massive thanks goes to all at Mortimer Spinks, Valtech and of course Peter himself.
