Annual CBI Conference 2013
Trudy Peeler, Head of Infrastructure & Technology, attended this year’s annual CBI conference where the theme of the day was “Getting on track for Global Success”. Discussions centred around the impact of globalisation with its shifting power bases, what businesses can do to remain competitive and the importance of trust and business reputation.
David Cameron delivered a very similar message to last year emphasising the role of education & skills, welfare reform and continued focus on reducing the deficit. Transport & Infrastructure investment was high on the agenda as this was a key area businesses asked for. There are £73 billion new road and rail projects in the pipeline, including HS2 which he saw as essential for unifying the country. He also called for a culture change in favour of enterprise and highlighted the speakers for schools programme as being essential in achieving this cultural change. Ed Balls also re-iterated Labours support for HS2 but called for such projects to be independently audited.
Change and Leadership featured heavily throughout the day. The highlight of the day was Sir Clive Woodward’s session on Achieving Global Sporting Success. Pitched by Jake Humphrey as a look at the use of technology in sport it was actually a brilliant case study of what it takes to be successful in any field and how to capture and use knowledge effectively to leverage talent. What came through was that without the right leadership, right team with a willingness to learn, practice and continuous improvement even the best talent may not deliver.
Leadership and change again featured in the panel discussions on both business trust and overcoming barriers to international success. Panellists including Justin King, Sam Laidlaw, Sir Richard Olver and Dr Ian Robertson. The discussions highlighted that an organisations ability to change and adopt new business models and effective leadership to set the tone and direction for an organisation as well as embedding a culture of change is critical for future success.
